Much like paragraphs, menus have also increased considerably in size, do you remember those tiny menus with pixel fonts from 2005? It seems incredible that in the space of a few years we have arrived at such an opposite end of the scale, fashion is so fickle! In this case, the size of the menus is also influenced by mobile patterns. In designs for mobile interfaces, the use of full-screen overlay menus is common, as interfaces are touch-based, and smaller touch targets would be harder for users to hit than larger ones. But following in the footsteps of paragraphs, it’s not only about the size, but also decorative elements, hovers and all types of micro-interactions and effects.

Micro-interactions are events with one purpose: to surprise the user and create an event that is inviting and human. Every time you take a small action on a website or app and there is a specific response to it, this is a micro-interaction. When you refresh a Twitter page and hear a beep, this is a micro-interaction. Or when you check Facebook, the red icon displaying your message count is—you guessed it— a micro-interaction. These have been the most common uses of them, but in 2019, web pages will heavily feature their more interactive incarnations. Hover and scrolling animations, chimes, and much more. All in all, this is a way to involve your audience in your website, to subtly transmit information to the users about their actions and usage, and make web pages feel a little smarter.

With the crazy world that we live in, more designers are creating projects that have more surreal and abstract elements in them. Surreal design and abstract design will continue to develop and grow as more users want these experiences that are almost, but not quite real. The reason this design technique works goes back to the idea of emotional connection: Surreal design and abstract design provide a connection for users that they can relate to on their own terms. (Maybe because more surreal and abstract elements allow users to picture themselves inside the design?)
